1.0 Energy for Sustainability

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Energy for Sustainability Grant program “supports fundamental research and education that will enable innovative processes for the sustainable production of electricity and transportation fuels. Processes for sustainable energy production must be environmentally benign, reduce greenhouse gas production, and utilize renewable resources. Current interest areas in sustainable energy technologies are: Biomass Conversion, Biofuels and Bioenergy; Photovoltaic Solar Energy; Wind Energy; Advanced Batteries for Transportation.”

The open solicitation period runs from June 8, 2011 through February 17, 2012. Awards are typically for three years and amount to, on average, $100,000 each year.

2.0 Army ERDC 2011 Broad Agency Announcement (BAA)

The Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) has issued a BAA for various research and development topic areas. Energy related topics include: Innovative Energy Efficiency and Energy Security Initiatives; Fuel Cell Technology Advancements; Innovative Electrical Power Architecture for Energy Surety; Microgrid Field-Scale Demonstration; Photosynthesis at the Microscale.

The solicitation is open from May 6, 2011-Jan 1, 2012, or until it has been superseded.

3.0 Research Interests of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research

This BAA from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, seeks fundamental research in three scientific directorates, namely, Aerospace, Chemical and Material Sciences (RSA), Physics and Electronics (RSE), and Mathematics, Information and Life Sciences (RSL).

4.0 Strategic Technologies (DARPA BAA)

This DARPA sponsored Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) is soliciting innovative proposals for research, development, design and testing that supports the Strategic Technology Office (STO) such as, Communications, Networks and Electronic Warfare; Cyber; Energy and Self-Sufficient Operations; Finding Difficult Targets; Recapturing Surprise; and Core Strategic Technologies. Energy related topics include:

  • Novel low weight/high efficiency power generator technologies
  • Power harvesting technologies and devices
  • Energy-related power systems and portable power technologies
  • Geothermal energy systems
  • High power density air independent propulsion
  • Power harvesting technologies and devices from earth's electro-magnetic or magnetotelluric fields

5.0 Solid State and Materials Chemistry

This solicitation through the National Science Foundation supports “basic research in solid state and materials chemistry comprising the elucidation of the atomic and molecular basis for material development and properties in the solid state from the nanoscale to the bulk.” Development of and studies of novel materials for energy harvesting, conversion and storage are encouraged under this solicitation.

The opportunity is open through Oct 31, 2011. The window for full proposal submission will be September 1, 2011 - October 31, 2011 and then, September 1 - October 31 annually thereafter.

6.0 Long Range Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for Navy and Marine Corps Science and Technology

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has released a BAA soliciting proposals for Long-Range Science and Technology Projects that will potentially advance and improve Navy and Marine Corps operations. ONR’s research directorates fall into the following categories: Ocean Battlespace Sensing; Command, Control Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance; Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare & Combating Terrorism Department; Sea Warfare and Weapons; Warfighter Performance; Naval Air Warfare and Weapons.

The BAA will remain open through September 30, 2011.

7.0 Energy, Power, and Adaptive Systems

The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports the Energy, Power and Adaptive Systems Program. This program invests in the design and analysis of intelligent and adaptive engineering networks, including sensing, imaging, controls, and computational technologies for a variety of application domains. Topics of interest to the program include alternate energy sources, the Smart Grid, and interdependencies of critical infrastructure in power and communications, energy scavenging and alternative energy technologies, including solar cells, ocean waves, wind, and low-head hydro.

8.0 DE-FOA-0000549: SunShot Initiative: Rooftop Solar Challenge to Induce Market Transformation

Sponsored by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy office, this funding opportunity seeks to “achieve measurable improvements in market conditions for rooftop photovoltaic across the United States, with an emphasis on streamlined and standardized permitting and interconnection processes.”

Letters of intent must be submitted by July 18, 2011 and Full applications must be submitted by August 31, 2011.
