Alternative energy is an umbrella term that refers to any source of usable energy intended to replace fuel sources without the undesired consequences of the replaced fuels[1]. A good primer on the history of alternative energy can be found on wikipedia. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_energy
In this portal we have chosen to discuss eight sources of alternative energy, identified in the drop-down menu above. When introducing a form of alternative energy the baseline technology and the technology gaps are briefly discussed. When possible a technology development roadmap is provided in order to highlight the technology needs that must be addressed to make that alternative economical and/or efficient. Key information on legislation and other initiatives aimed at accelerating the development of these technologies are also introduced and potential end uses of the technology discussed. A description of sample projects is also included, highlighting potential advantages and disadvantages. This site is intended to serve as an introduction and interested parties are referred to the news feed, and the report section of the portal for more in-depth information.
