The U.S. Department of Energy defines clean coal technology as “a new generation of energy processes that sharply reduce air emissions and other pollutants from coal-burning power plants.” Clean coal covers a variety of technologies by which coal is burned more efficiently and produces less carbon dioxide (CO2) than is produced by conventional coal power plants.
Environmental control systems, and other traditional technologies that reduce sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NO) and particulate matter emissions, are not considered clean coal technologies.
