Nuclear energy creates hazardous waste as a by-product of energy production. This waste must be stored for tens of thousands of years in a secure underground facility.
Some fear that the widespread use of nuclear energy would contribute to nuclear weapon proliferation, as fuel enrichment processes are similar to those used to create weapons-grade nuclear products.
Without significant funding of R&D in the creation of innovative plants, the cost of building plants and producing nuclear energy may not be economically competitive with current energy production methods.
