Is there a nuclear energy roadmap for the U.S.?

While not a roadmap for the U.S. alone, the “Technology Roadmap for Generation IV Nuclear Energy Systems,” dating from December 2002, was issued by the Department of Energy Nuclear Energy Research Advisory Committee and the Generation IV International Forum (GIF). The GIF is a consortium of ten countries with nuclear power who hope to develop technologically advanced nuclear energy systems, both in a cost-effective and safe, environmentally-friendly way. GIF hopes to have these new, safe, economic nuclear power plants ready for use by 2030.

The Nuclear Energy Advisory Committee (NEAC), an advisory body to the Office of Nuclear Energy at the Department of Energy, created a report titled “Nuclear Energy: Policies and Technology for the 21st Century” in late 2008. This report outlines potential scenarios for nuclear power development in the United States, as well as actions the government must take if it hopes to be a world leader in nuclear power plant design and operation. It also discusses policy issues, including a stance on nuclear nonproliferation.
