What are the energy end-uses for wind?

Wind energy can be used for industrial or residential applications, the same as conventionally produced electricity.

There are four basic wind applications:

  • Utility-scale wind farms, both land-based and offshore
  • Community-owned projects, which often generate power for local use
  • Institutional and Business applications
  • Off-grid home installations and behind-the-meter farm/ranch/home systems

Utility-scale wind farms usually use WTG that are larger than 1,000 kW to produce power, accounting for more than 90% of all wind power generated in the US.[1]
