Wind Energy Availability Across the U.S.

The top ten U.S. states in terms of funding wind turbine technology are:

  • Texas
  • California
  • Iowa
  • Minnesota
  • Washington
  • Oregon
  • Colorado
  • New York
  • Kansas
  • Illinois

Texas has the largest statewide expenditure, estimated at more than $3 billion in 2008. New wind turbine developments and technologies are often tested in California, which spent an estimated $676 million on wind turbines in 2008. Iowa is expected to spend over $1.3 billion in 2008.[1] The DOE has created a U.S. map displaying the average wind power estimates at 50 meters above the surface, to view see, http://www.windpoweringamerica.gov/pdfs/wind_maps/us_windmap.pdf.

Installed Wind Energy Projects, as of December 2008

Here is a map of installed wind energy projects in the U.S., from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA)[2], as of 12/31/08:
