What is a PEO?

PEO stands for Program Executive Office and Program Executive Officer. A PEO has primary responsibility for directing several acquisition I progams and for assigned acquisition II, III, and IV programs. The following figure represents the relationship of the PEO to the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics USD (AT&L)

Acquisition I

What is an Acqusition 1 or an ACAT 1 program?

An ACAT 1 program is a program which the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Technology (USD(A&T)) anticipates will eventually require in excess of $355 million for research, development, test and evaluation or in excess of $2,135 billion for procurement. Examples of Navy ACAT 1C programs include:

  • Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA)
  • AGM-88E Advanced Anti - Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM Program)
  • AIM-9X-Air-to-Air Missile Upgrade including AIM-9X P31
  • AN/WQR-3 Advanced Deployable System (ADS)

Acquisition II, III, and IV

What is an acquisition 2, 3, or 4 program?

Also referred to as ACAT 2, 3, and 4 programs, each ACAT differs in the size of the associated budget for RDT&E and procurement.

  • AN/AAR-47 V2 Upgrade Missile/Laser Warning Receiver
  • BYG-1 Fire Control (Weapon Control & TMA)
