NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) performs fundamental research in aeronautics and leading-edge fields to both support future air and space vehicles and better the nation’s air transportation systems. While the directorate focuses research efforts on NASA-related issues, they also research issues pertinent to civilian and commercial air travel. The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) is one of the central projects of the ARMD, increasing the capacity, efficiency, and flexibility of our national air transportation system. In addition, ARMD works to advance fundamental understanding of key aeronautics disciplines, including emissions, performance, efficiency, noise, and safety, making it possible to fly in any atmospheric conditions.
