State Resources
This resource is provided as a service to Phase II SBIR/STTR awardees. Companies that are completing Phase II awards from any agency often need additional funding to continue the maturation of their technology, while expanding the implementation of their commercialization strategy. With this in mind, the purpose of this tool is to increase the awareness of state programs that may assist small, advanced technology firms achieve these goals.
Organized by state, each entry highlights advanced tech initiatives affiliated with the State’s Department of Economic Development. What quickly becomes apparent is that the history, natural resources, academic institutions and presence of Federal facilities often shape what a state may emphasize. We have chosen to highlight those organizations and programs that provide grants, loans, and investments for advanced technology firms. Also included are organizations that can assist with production scale-up, and/or provide opportunities for networking. This is intended as a sampler and is not intended to be a comprehensive catalog.

Information on federal programs in your area
For companies looking for general business support at no cost, the Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) provides information on the SBDC organizations in your state. In addition, the Apex Accelerators, funded by the Department of Defense provide an invaluable, free service by helping companies learn how to register for the System for Awards Management (SAM). Companies wishing to learn more about government contracting will also find the Apex Accelerators to be very helpful. Another valuable resource offering free assistance is the Senior Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). A particular strength is understanding financials.
As small businesses mature and need assistance with scaling up for production, be sure to explore the Manufacturing Extension Program (MEP) in your state. Funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), this is an excellent resource.
