It’s so hard to be patient, sitting in the wings waiting for things to “get back to normal”. In an article released in March, 2026 entitled “SBIR/STTR Restart Timeline”, the author provided insight into when this might happen for each agency. Amongst these was the Department of Energy (DOE) which was called out as being the “Hardest Agency to Predict” because of the degree of change the Agency is under-going.
With respect to the DOE, small businesses muse about many things. When will the solicitations be released? How will DOE’s project pitch process work? What topics will be of interest? What will happen to projects that are on hold? Will DOE really have open topics? How will the transfer of the SBIR/STTR programs to the Office of Technology Commercialization work? What is the expectation about interaction with the Federal Labs? To these questions, there are currently no answers….but there are many clues.
The Department of Energy’s priorities have been made abundantly clear by the Trump Administration. Therefore, to provide ourselves and hopefully you with insight, we began exploring the challenges that DOE has been asked to address and which Secretary Wright is implementing. Our assumption is that topics, when they come out will relate to these priority areas. With this in mind, we invite you to take a look at the Energy Insights section that we have just added to Dawnbreaker’s website. Our goal with this addition is to provide small business that we have assisted in the past with useful information about DOE’s priorities; as well as insight into associated Federal Laboratories initiatives, and new opportunities which are announced periodically on DOE’s websites.
We invite you to take a look at the Critical Minerals and Materials section and to spend time exploring the Key Challenges, the Knowledge Hub and upcoming U.S. Conferences. While there, be sure to also take a look at the other Key priority areas which include Oil and Natural Gas, Nuclear Technologies, Fusion, Clean Coal, Grid Reliability and Affordability and Supply Chain Security.
